Environmental conservation ; everything you need to know

What is environmental conservation

It's been a while since environmental concerns have been in the public speech as well as in policies and election proposals. The public conciousness is, to some degree, aware of the fact that the only way we will be able to continue existing in this world as we know it is by taking all measures necessary to not destroy it in the near future. This might seem a bit obvious, but for a long time people have acted and made theit choices, building entire civilizations ignoring this basic premise. The evolution of technology and techniques for economical exploitation of resources and the explosion of the world population have the balance of the environment against the ropes, and for quite some time now we have started to experience the consequencies of our actions upon the planet. Natural catastrophes, harsh weather that has taken many lives acros the world, and raging wars over natural resources such as petrol are just the tip of the iceberg of the chaos we might cause if we don't change the way we impact our planet with our activities.

So in order to further understand actions taken to preserve the environment, we must first take a look at what environmental conservation really is. Let's take a look at the concept of environmental conservation and understand the right definitions that apply to conservative actions as well as other policies concerning the protection of the environment.

Conservation versus preservation

Politics about environmentalism stem from the ideas people have about what nature really is, what is its purpose, where its value lies and which is the best way to behave in relation witn the environment. There are two major sides in this argument, but they are often confused for one another and used interchangeably, while in fact they represent opposite approaches to the desired policieson this issue. These are environmental conservation and environmental preservation.

Environmental conservation conceives nature as a source of resources at the human being's disposal. We take our raw materials and our energy from nature, and without them, we can't build society and culture as we know it. However, the excessive exploitation of these resources destroys the environment, and therefore, prevents us from using those resources in the future. As a result, conservationism states that we should exploit these resources in a resonable and sustainable way, so future generations can enjoy them as well.

This approach has many ramifications and fields of application, because all human activities should be designed with environmental conservation and sustainability in mind. Hence the creation of many careers in environmental conservation as well as the development of policies and methods aiming to use natural resources in a responsible way. A bodiversity legal framework and tax policies that encourage the use of green energy and the implementation of corporate responsibility ethics help promote reasonable exploitation models.

On the other hand, preservation states that nature should remain untouched, and not exploited for the benefit of human economy. That there is inherent value in the wilderness, and as such it should remain. For this reason, every time we try to think of a way to safely and responsibly exploiting resources and using natural elements for the progress of technology and society as we know it, we take a conservationist approach instead of a preservationist approach.

Our personal responsibility

According to conservationist values, every person in the world has some degree of responsibility over the protection of the environment, because it is everyone's actions, all together, that have a potentially negative impact on the planet. Big organizations, like companies, NGOs and governments should take measures in order to protect the environment, but people around the world should also make changes, however small, so the combined effect of all of our choices changes the world for the better.

Small actions and modifications on your reach can make a difference. Save energy by switching to green sources and turning off lights and devices you don't use. Replace your car for a bycicle or public transport, or try converting to LPG. Dispose of your waste responsibly and learn about recycling centers in your area. Use products that are not toxic and do not pollute the environment. Join environmental causes and spare some time to collaborate with NGOs. All these small things can add up and make a big difference if we all work together.

Being responsible with our environment doesn't have to be a burden or harm our personal economy. Just make the right choices and you will be helping create a better word for your children and grandchildren.
